San Antonio Spurs veteran Manu Ginobili signed a two-year contract extension with the team this summer, but the New York Times is just now revealing that took two attempts to get Ginobili’s signature. The Spurs’ original offer was sent to Argentina in the care of a Spurs intern, and was signed by Ginobili, but a rogue Argentinean bird caused the contract to disappear as the intern prepared to fly back to Texas.

Hours before the Spurs’ intern was to fly home from Buenos Aires, team officials said that he was strafed by a bird in a park. As he tidied up at a fountain, his backpack disappeared. Inside were Ginobili’s signed contract, along with the intern’s passport, cellphone and laptop.Luckily, an international sports crisis was averted. An assistant traveling to Buenos Aires soon after brought a fresh contract and returned it to Texas without incident.
There’s an outside chance this bird attack could be Manu’s karmic revenge for striking down a live bat during a game in 2009. Aerial animals have to stick together.
