The 2011 MVP hypes his return in a new Adidas commercial.
Derrick Rose knows that all eyes will be on him when he takes the court on October 29. He hasn’t played in over a year, sitting out all of the 2012-13 Chicago Bulls season afters suffering a torn ACL in the previous playoffs. His decision not to return late last season, especially during the playoffs, was the source of much debate and controversy around the league. The 2011 league MVP knows he has to win back some skeptics. Those efforts are kickstarted by his latest Adidas commercial: “Did I deserve the world lifting me up when I was down?” he wonders during the minute-long spot. “Will I be able to give my city the ultimate thank-you?” Rose and the Bulls are hoping his conservative rehab strategy pays off. He came under fire during the season after telling USA TODAY Sports that he didn’t want to return until he was “110%,” which is unusual in an age where many athletes try to speed up their recovery from major injuries. However, considering Rose was in the first year of a five-year, $94 million contract extension, taking the long view and putting the next several seasons of the Bulls’ title window over a short-term comeback effort was the right choice to make, even if it was unpopular with fans. The fact that his teammates and head coach Tom Thibodeau have defended his recovery process makes it clear that the Bulls are on the same page as their best player. The Bulls open their season in Miami on October 29, and Rose is expected to be fully ready to go. A lot of questions will be answered that day.
