USMNT player suspended after opponent takes shocking dive

Matt Belser will miss the game against Mexico for the silliest of reasons.
Defender Matt Besler will miss the United States men’s national team’s biggest game of the year Tuesday against rival Mexico thanks to a cynical dive by Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell. During Friday’s 3-1 loss to Costa Rica, Besler picked up the yellow card after Campbell fell to the turf, but new field-level video proves that the referee made a major error in handing out punishment to Besler.

With the referee’s attention turned to the throw-in, Campbell inexplicably drops to the field and rolls around for a while.

After conferring with his assistants through his earpiece, the referee gave Besler a yellow card, which rules him out of Tuesday’s showdown with Mexico. The booking was Besler’s second in the final round of qualifying, which results in an automatic one-game suspension.
